MySQL is a free open source database used by this web site and hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) of others. It is by far the most popular database for good reason, its the best, has great support, works well with everything else on the web and its free.
It started out small and due to the efforts of thousands of people supporting it and helping with development it grew from a mostly home user database to become the database used on maybe 90% or more of web servers around the world and evolving to challenge even the biggest like Oracle.
Now Oracle it taking over the current owners of MySQL.
If Oracle changes MySQL to become a commercial product it will mean the end of support from thousands of volunteers and the end of hundreds of thousands of sites like this one.
