View Full Version : How to add pictures to your messages

First I must ask you to please avoid putting your pictures on other sites then linking to them in your posts. Doing this means all your pictures will load full size every time somebody views the thread.

We understand that you want people to see your pictures full size and most of us want to see them but not every time we visit the thread. For people with slow internet connections it creates a big problem because loading all the full size pictures makes the thread very slow to load. The result is that people will avoid the thread after the first time they see it.

To add pictures to posts:

When you enter the text of your message scroll down to below the "Submit Reply" or "Submit New Thread" button and you will see a "Manage Attachments" button. Click the "Manage Attachments" button and you can upload up to five images with the current post.

This places thumbnails below your post so people can choose what to view full size rather than having the pictures pushed in their face. The software also resizes your images to the maximum size allowed (if they are too big) and also creates an intermediate size for big pictures. The thread loads much faster and everyone is happy. Another benefit is that you don't lose all your pictures when another size makes changes.

Many thanks for your support and cooperation.

Hi Frank,

I save all my pictures on Photobucket but I save them in a 640 x 480 format. Is this considered too large?

Hi Dan,

Welcome to the forum.

Its actually OK if it is just one or two pictures. The problem is some people will post dozens of pictures then everything becomes a horrible mess. There are also problems with photobucket as often the pictures no longer show up.

On my big forums it is totally discouraged and even banned because one person puts one picture then the others think its OK and post dozens of huge pictures.

By the way you can also load pictures from a URL so you can add photobucket pictures using manage attachments.

This forum is unlikely to become very big so maybe it won't be a problem. If it does become a problem as it has on other sites I may be forced to block photobucket URLs.

An example of loading images from photobucket. Just copy and paste the URLs into the fields when you go to "Manage Attachments" instead of into the message. The software will create the thumbnail and place it below your message. If you click on the attached thumbnail you get to see the original big picture. You also end up with a backup copy of your pictures.

When you click on a user's name you should see a pop-up or drop-down list with the top item being View Profile.

If you are not seeing this you may be using old browser software and/or have an old version of Java installed.
